Cute Cloche Hat FREE Sewing Tutorial

Cloches were close-fitting hats that were worn quite low – almost down to the eyebrows. They were made in a variety of styles from brimless to turned-up brims. They only cost between $1 and $5 back then! This hat is quite easy to make – so let's get started.

What you'll need:

  • half a yard of premium felt (or other material for hat)
  • sewing machine
  • hand-sewing needle, thread & pins
  • scissors or rotary cutting tool & mat
  • *optional: starch

How do you rate this pattern? :

The hat is so cute I had to try this tutorial but sadly there are several issues with it. The biggest one is the scale of the pattern, I had to tinker with the printer to get something that could work because if you print the pdf as it is you get pieces so small that the hat could only fit a doll! Many people have commented about that on the website where the tutorial is hosted to no avail. The other issue I had was the shape of the front piece (there are a front piece, a back piece and two identical pieces for the top of the hat plus a brim), it was too large and was very ill fitting and the pieces didn’t fit each other very well. I could give a better fit by replacing the front piece with another back piece but still, the fit isn’t that great and I don’t plan on using that pattern again. It’s a pity because the way the pieces are laid is different from all the other patterns I have seen so far and it looks quite unique!
