100+ Free Fleece Sewing Projects: Winter’s Coming!

Winter's coming. Stay warm with some fleece sewing projects?

Winter is on the way, at least in the northern hemisphere, which means cold weather and shorter days and longer nights.   One of the best ways to combat the chill is with fleece fabric.

Fleece fabric, also known as “polar fleece” was first manufactured in Massachusetts in 1979 by Malden Mills, (now Polartec LLC) developed Synchilla (synthetic chinchilla).[2] which was a new, light, strong pile fabric meant to mimic, and in some ways surpass, wool.

A lightweight, warm and soft fabric, fleece has some of wool's good qualities but weighs a fraction of the lightest available woolens. Fleece fabrics and garments traditionally come in different thicknesses: micro, 100, 200, and 300, with 300 being the thickest, least flexible, and harder to work with.

Fleece is hydrophobic  which means it holds less than 1% of its weight in water. The fabric retains much of its insulating quality even when wet. Fleece is machine washable and dries quickly making it a good alternative to wool for those who are allergic or sensitive to wool. It can also be made out of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, or even recycled fleece.

So how is fleece made anyway?

Here's a fantastic little video I found on the topic.

Sewing fleece is pretty easy.  Why don't you give it a try?

Want a cold-weather idea that doesn't have to use fleece?

You could use fleece in this winter hat project but you don't have to.  I've designed it to use faux fur trimming and knit ribbing fabric, although you could substitute fleece for this if you want to.

I’m in a sewing mood. I do have some fleece. I’ll check out your patterns. Maybe to begin with a pillow for a cat bed.
