Free Hanging Kitchen Towel Sewing Pattern

When I was a kid I remember my mom having hanging kitchen towels, and I thought they were just for decoration. Now that I am a mom, hanging towels are the best thing ever!
I’m always picking up a hand towel or kitchen towel off of the ground so these totally solve my problem. I created a free hanging kitchen towel with two different views, and a guide to help you fold or gather the towel to the right size. These are easy sewing projects, and you can make a lot at once!
I bought a pack of four towels and turned it into six different hanging towels. I love that I can get so many hanging towels from one pack and that they all coordinate. I think it would be really fun to make a bunch as a hostess gift or house warming gift.
What fabric works best with a hanging kitchen towel?
The part that loops over can be made out of quilting cotton, cotton canvas, or thin hand towels cut up. You don’t want anything too bulky.
You will want the hanging part to be an actual towel so that it can still function as a towel. It’ll be fun to coordinate pretty fabric prints with the pretty towels.

What is a PDF sewing pattern?
A PDF pattern is a sewing pattern designed on the computer and organized so that it can be printed on several letter or A4 size pieces of paper.
I love using PDF sewing patterns because if the pattern gets ruined or if my children or I changed sizes, I can always print it again. It’ll never be destroyed since I have a digital version!
How do you use a PDF sewing pattern?
Open the PDF on a computer and click print. When printing make sure that the scaling is set to 100% or no scaling so that the pattern prints at the correct size. Learn how to use PDF sewing patterns.
Make the Free Hanging Kitchen Towel Sewing Pattern
Supplies
- light to medium weight kitchen towels (each towel gets cut and creates two)
- quilting cotton (or one of the towels)
- lightweight interfacing
- plastic snaps
- sewing tools
- sewing machine

Cut two pieces of fabric per towel using the pattern. You can use quilting cotton or one of the towels. I tried both and the quiltinng cotton is slightly easier to sew, but I really like the look of the towel on towel.
The pattern has a square and curve pattern piece and either one can be used. In this example I use the square version, but give information for both versions.
Cut and interface the back of both pieces of fabric.
Cut your towel down the center of the longest side to create two towels.
Pleat or gather the towel along the top to fit the guide. Since every towel is a slightly different size, the guide will help you being it in to the right measurement.
- To gather you can sew two rows of basting stitches and then pull the bobbin thread until it’s the same width as the guide.
- To pleat divide the towel into 5 different points. Bring in point 1 and 5 to met at point 3. Point 2 and 4 stay out at the edges with the hemmed sides.
If pleating pin the pleats in place and gather along the top.
Place one of the pattern pieces right sides together with the top of the towel (either gathered or pleated). There should be 3/4 inch space on each side. If using the curve piece, the curve will not be pinned to the towel but the straight side will be.
Baste these two pieces together.
Place the other pattern piece right sides down on the basted section. Match up the top, sides, and corners. You will be sewing around all four sides while leaving a 4 inch hole for the towel to be and to turn it right side out.
If using the curved version, still leave a 4 inch hole on one side for turning.
Sew with a 1/2 inch seam allowance around the piece. Backstitch when you start and stop.
Trim the corners and/or notch the curve.
Turn the top right side out and poke out the corners and/or curves. Press everything flat.
Edgestitch around all the edges closing the hole.
Fold the top down to meet the front of the towel. Add a closure like plastic snaps or a button and buttonhole.
Make lots and lots! You can see the ones with a quilting cotton top and the ones with a towel top. Both work well.

You don’t need to increase the size of the pattern for the towel topper. Printing at 100% should print the right size for you.
