My husband and I will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary next summer, and we decided a long time ago that we would go on a cruise to celebrate. Since we’re about a year away, we’ve been doing some shopping, and the locations we’re considering have me in a VERY tropical mood.
As luck would have it, we’re also due for this month’s hot pad. Piña colada, anyone?
In case you’re new to this year-long series, I’m sharing a monthly hot pad pattern. The design is based on the same shape every month, and I’m challenging myself to see how creative I can get with it.
This pineapple is number six (we’re halfway done!). You can see the rest by hovering over Tutorials at the top of this page and clicking on Hot Pads.

To make this bit of pineapple goodness, you’ll need
cotton fabric
thin cotton batting
Cut the following:
2 pineapples – yellow cotton fabric
1 pineapple - Insul-Bright
1 pineapple – thin batting
2 crowns – green cotton fabric
1 crown – Insul-Bright
1 crown – thin batting
In the interest of using proper terminology, I had to look up the name for the green top of a pineapple. Apparently it’s a crown. How did I live this long without knowing that?
I decided to make the crown just as padded as the pineapple so that the entire thing can function as a hot pad, but it does make the points a bit more difficult to push out.
If you’d like to make that easier, leave out one or both layers of padding, but I would add iron-on interfacing to at least one of the cotton fabric pieces. Also, don’t put hot stuff on that part.
Layer the crown pieces with the Insul-Bright at the bottom, the thin batting, one fabric piece face up and the second face down. Stitch around 1/4” from the edge, leaving the bottom open.
Trim the seams and clip the corners. Cut down as much of the bulk from the padding as you can without endangering your seams.
Turn the crown right side out. You’ll need something pointy to carefully push out the crown tips. Press. Topstitch close to the edge.
Layer the pineapple with the Insult-Bright on the bottom, followed by the thin batting and one of the cotton fabric pieces. Lay the crown on top with the bottom edge even with the top edge of the pineapple and the spikes to the inside.
Fold the shortest points in and pin to the crown so they won’t get caught in the stitching. If you’re concerned about the pin tips making it difficult to turn, use safety pins.
Lay the remaining fabric pineapple over the top, face down. Pin generously. Stitch around, leaving 4” open at the bottom. Clip the corners.
Turn right side out, pulling out the crown. Don’t forget about those pins inside.
Press, turning in the opening. Top stitch around the edge.
Stitch diagonal lines as shown on the pattern. My fabric happened to have a diagonal design to it already, so I followed those lines instead, but the idea is the same.
All done, and ready for your coffee cup. Or a fruity drink with an umbrella in it. My daughter (otherwise known as the owner of the Pineapple Bag) has already claimed this one.
