Sharing is caring!

Store-bought placemats are of course available in plenty. You get all types in all different kinds of fabrics. But, these placemats can never give you the contentment and the happiness of using self-made ones.

This tutorial on how to make a placemat comes with a cutlery pocket. You can now arrange your cutleries neatly and set your dinner table in style.

DIY Placemat sewing tutorial

You can sew these reversible placemats in types that can match your home. In this tutorial on how to make placemats, I have used rickrack for embellishment. You can leave the rickrack and the cutlery pockets and sew a simple reversible placemat if you need a quick sew project.

But the rickrack embellishment and the useful pockets are something I don’t want to do away with. These are the features that make this placemat sewing pattern unique.

Cut the two main pieces and one interfacing piece according to the dimensions above.

Cut the pocket pieces and the interfacing piece, also referring to the dimensions above.

Place the interfacing centered on the wrong side of one of the placemat pieces. Warm the iron and gently press in the middle of the interfacing. Turn over to the right side and press, starting from the center outwards to eliminate any creases and wrinkles.

Take one of the pocket pieces and fold it in half diagonally. Hand press to form a crease along the center.

Cut the pocket interfacing piece into half, diagonally.

Place the interfacing centered on the wrong side of the square pocket piece, aligning the longer edge with the diagonal of the square. Softly press the interfacing to fuse.

Fold the pocket diagonally in half, with the wrong sides together and press taut. Next, take one of the pocket rickrack pieces and place it along the longer edge. Pin and sew to join.

Let’s sew the pocket to the placemat.

Align the raw edge of the pocket with the edges of one of the corners of the placemat, on its right side. Pin and sew the pocket to the placemat.

Let’s sew the casing for the cutleries.

Draw a straight line, on the pocket piece,  2- inches from the shorter edge and parallel to it. Next, draw a second line, 2- inches from the first as shown above. Sew a straight line stitch along the drawn lines. Our pockets for the cutleries are ready.

Repeat with the other placemat and pocket pieces.

Next, we sew the ricrac. We can sew the ricrac to the placemat piece on which the interfacing is not attached (to reduce the bulk while sewing).

Take the required length of the ricrac. Starting from the middle of one of the longer edges, pin the ricrac along the edge of the placemat piece, on its right side.

Once you reach the corner, fold the ricrac down by 90 degrees and start aligning the ricrac with the side below.

Keep pinning the ricrac around the edge of the placemat, till you reach the other end of the ricrac. Overlap the edges of the ricrac by ½- inch such that the raw edge face outwards (*this would get covered up while the placemat pieces are sewn together). Sew the rickrack to the placemat piece.

Let’s join the two placemat pieces together.

Place the two placemat pieces layered with the right sides together and edges aligning. Sew the two pieces together, just next to the edge of the interfacing. Leave a gap of 4 to 5 inches in the middle of the longer side of the placemat to turn the right side out.

Clip the corners and trim the edges. Turn the right side out through the opening.

Press and topstitch along the edge to make it neat and crisp.

Our reversible pocket placemat is ready!

This is one of the easiest placemat patterns I have ever used. I have made some for Thanksgiving this year. I am already starting my Christmas gift-giving I do need more Christmas fabric though. I made Christmas tree shaped mats for the center of the table.
