How to Make a Wrist Pin Cushion

How to Make a Wrist Pin Cushion

I have two pin cushions that I use. When I sew, I have a tall pin cushion shaped like a mannequin that you could learn to make following my mannequin pin cushion tutorial and a wrist pin cushion.  I really like my wrist pin cushion because of its convenience and ease of use.  I decided to take the opportunity to show you just how I made my wrist pin cushion.  It is a super simple sewing project that anyone with basic sewing skills can make.  It is a terrific beginner sewing project that will get you started on your way to sewing curves and buttons.  This wrist pin cushion is also a great scrap buster project.

I used some scrap fabrics that I had on hand for this project so I highly recommend that you look in your stash or scrap pile for fabrics for your wrist pin cushion.  If you do not have scraps or a stash head to JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores, Hobby Lobby or Fabric.com to get the perfect fabric for your project.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Step 1: Cut the fabric

Cut two circles of fabric using the pattern.

Step 2: Stitch the fabric

Using a 3/8″ seam allowance stitch the circles right sides together leaving an opening of about 1″ for turning. Turn the circles right sides out and press. Using a Frixion heat erasable pen or tailor’s chalk divide the circle in eight equal segments.

Step 3: Stuff the Circles

Using either the ultra fine steel wool or the polyester fiberfill stuff the circles so that they are firm. If you went help keeping your needles sharp I recommend using the steel wool.  I used fiberfill for my project because it is what I had on hand.  Sew the opening closed using ladder stitch.  If you are unfamiliar with ladder stitch take a look at this video.  It will walk you through step by step how to complete this invisible stitch.

Step 4: Add the Upholstery Thread

Following the lines that you drew in step 2 sew the upholstery thread.  I used a long doll makers needle for this as it was much easier.  You can use a standard longer length needle if you like.  I also used upholstery thread for this because it is very strong and will not break as you pull it taut. I doubled up the thread.  Place your needle through the center of the cushion and pull it through the other side.  Wrap the thread around the side and place it back through the center.  Continue this process until all segments have been completed.  This will segment your pin cushion.

Step 5: Add the buttons and elastic

Measure your wrist to determine how long your elastic needs to be.  Keep in mind that the elastic should be taut when it is on your wrist so that the cushion stays on top of your wrist as you sew.  Don’t make it too tight though.  Overlap the ends of the elastic and baste.  This can be done by hand.  Add a button to the overlapped ends. Stitch the elastic and button through the center of the cushion to the other side where you will add another button.  Continue to stitch back and forth through the center and the button holes until you feel it is secured.  You have now finished your wrist pin cushion.  Fun and functional.
