Pattern Weights FREE Sewing Tutorial

You probably already know this, but pinning your pattern pieces to the fabric can cause the fabric to stretch, wrinkle, bulge, and otherwise not cut correctly (especially with knit fabric). It also tears your pattern pieces. And it is s-l-o-w.

Using pattern weights is so much faster plus all your work smoothing out the fabric is not wasted. The weights will gently hold the pattern in place while you cut.

What you'll need:

  • Three-inch squares
  • Ribbon
  • Sewing Pins
  • Scissor
  • Rice, small beans, or other material to add weight
  • Sewing machine

These are darling and your mix of colors is very pretty!
I love using pattern weights, they make cutting so much easier and accurate. I make my own too – I buy lots of inexpensive, heavy fender washers at the local hardware store, hot glue and stack them 4 or 5 high. Then I use my pinking shears to cut squares out of scraps. I center my stack of washers on the square, gather it up all together at the top and tie with a skinny ribbon, or twine, or heavy duty thread. Voila! I have a useful and pretty pattern weight. It’s quick, no sew, sufficiently heavy and the flat bottoms hold fabric smoothly. Plus the little gathered part at the top is a great handle.

Love your idea. I’ve had and used weights since I was a teen and my dad had a set made for me in the shop at work. I treasure those things. But your idea sounds pretty and I like the “handle”.

I use magnets, since I want my pattern to stay with the fabric even when I pick it up and move it.
