How to choose

  • First pair of pants ever? Start with an elastic waist: the Linen Pants, Easy Culottes, or any pajama pants. No zippers, no fitting darts.
  • Sewing with knits? The joggers, leggings, and sweatpants are designed for stretch fabrics and forgive small fitting mistakes.
  • Short on fabric? Shorts and the Zero Waste Pajama Shorts need a meter or less.
  • Ready for a challenge? The Cargo Pants and Walking Shorts introduce fly zippers, slant pockets, and proper waistbands.

Pants sewing questions

Are all of these patterns really free?
Yes. Every pattern listed is free, either as a downloadable pattern or a measure-and-cut tutorial. Each listing links to the pattern page with full details.
What is the easiest pants pattern for a beginner?
Elastic waist styles: pajama pants, the Linen Pants, or the Easy Culottes. No closures to sew and very forgiving fit.
How much fabric do I need to sew pants?
Full length pants usually take 2 to 2.5 meters; shorts and culottes often need 1 meter or less. Each pattern page lists exact amounts.
Can I sew pants without a pattern?
Yes. Several tutorials here draft directly from your measurements or from a pair of pants you already own; look for Made to measure in the sizes column.

I’m teaching my grandson to sew and I am looking for men’s pants patterns. Do you have any suggestions for where to look?

I am new to PDF patterns. I have printed out the palazzo pants but I can’t see any sewing instructions or seam allowance. Also not sure about where to match up the patterns to tape together? Not feeling the sharpest knife in the drawer atm seeing lots of pants already made. Using Adobe to print all the pattern has printed just not sure how to assemble. Help!
